The following subject details give a brief outline of what each course contains and the subject fees. Each subject is taught by NHA master trainers who are specialist in their subject matter. Anatomy and Physiology 1 & 2
Pre-requisites: None
Anatomy and Physiology 1 & 2 are structured through on-line learning programs + 8 in-class tutorials which cover the following subjects:-

The A&P course is broken into A&P Level 1 – Certificate IV and A&P Level 2 – Diploma.
The A&P Level 1 – Cert IV covers: Anatomical Terminology, Skeletal System, Muscular System, both the Nervous System & the Digestive System (briefly) and the main functions of all 11 systems.
The A&P Level 2 – Diploma covers: the rest of the systems in greater detail and then also goes over the Cert IV sections to confirm understanding and greater depth of knowledge.
Assessment is done in the way of written assessment workbook as the practical is tested throughout the practical subjects.

Provide First Aid
Pre-requisites: Massage 1 & 2
This is a compulsory subject required by all associations and health funds.

Due to changes in Academy Policies, the subject, “Provide First Aid HLTAID003” may now be undertaken at another Government Accredited training institute of your choice instead of on campus at the NHAA.

The “Provide First Aid” course that you study must have the current Unit Of Competency Code “HLTAID003” in order for the NHAA to recognise the accreditation. You can choose to study Provide First Aid at any time that is suitable to you.


Lymphatic Drainage 1
Pre-requisites: Massage 2, Structural Anatomy & Sports Massage 1

This is an entry level course that takes the therapist through Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) techniques that can be used to manipulate areas of the body in order to drain superficial and deep lymphatic tissue that will in-turn give the client relief of lymphatic discomfort (due to either swelling from injury and/or more complicated medical conditions).

This course is suited to people wishing to specialise in the world of therapeutic massage and is a very good way to build a client base for your sports/therapy massage practice.

This subject covers:

Safety considerations and contraindications of MLD
The uses and limitations of employing MLD techniques
Practical demonstration of a MLD routine
Hands-on practice with the massage routine, guided and assessed by your facilitator
Assessment is done in the way of written assessment workbook and practical observation.

Manage a Practice
Business Mastery
Pre-requisites: Manage Work Health & Safety (preferred)

A broad range of business and marketing subjects are covered to teach the practitioner about the requirements for a successful practice. The course is taught by business professionals who practice Tactile Therapies and ensure the information is related specifically to your needs.

Manage Health & Safety
Pre-requisites: None

This subject covers such topics as infection control, work health and safety issues. This subject should be taken before undertaking Manage a Practice and is a pre-requisite for undertaking Supervised Clinic.

Massage 1
Introduction to Massage
Pre-requisites: None

This is a great introduction to the professional art of massage! Emphasis is on developing sensitivity and awareness, which promotes comfort and security through touch. Body use and posture awareness skills are taught to ensure a fluid and rhythmic massage is performed.

You will enjoy a supportive environment that fosters creativity, ease of learning and excellent body mechanics. our most experienced trainers teach this course as correct instruction is vital for good foundations. You will learn:

The introductory course is great for working on family and friends, or those involved in sporting activities. This course is a great way of deciding whether the massage industry is for you and what is involved. The course itself is Massage I of the Certificate IV course and conforms to government accreditation guidelines.

A broader spectrum of massage techniques are covered, including invigorating and percussion techniques. You will be introduced to clinical practice at the Academy. After completing the course you will be able to perform a full body massage to professional standards and incorporate:

Myofascial Release / CST I
Foundations
Pre-requisites: Massage 1 & 2 or equivalent

Myofascial Release (MFR) is a therapeutic treatment utilising a gentle form of stretching the connective tissue. It produces a profound healing effect upon the body tissues, eliminating pain, restoring motion and releasing patterns of stress.

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a holistic healing practice that uses very light touching to balance the craniosacral system in the body, which includes the bones, nerves, fluids & connective tissues of the cranium and spinal area. Both methods combine well to treat a variety of conditions such as:

Myofascial Release / CST 3
The Neck and Jaw
Pre-requisites: Myofascial Release / CST 1 PLUS Supervised Clinic 1

Note: Myofascial Release / CST 3 can be done before Myofascial Release/CST 2 Retreat – “Unwinding The Fascia” (further information regarding Myofascial Release/CST 2 can be found at www.craniosacraltherapy.com.au)

Demonstrates advanced techniques, especially for the hard palate and cranial constrictions. Concepts of the relationship between physical and emotional patterns are demonstrated regarding the jaw and neck. More cranial-sacral therapy techniques are introduced. The seminar will show you how to treat conditions such as chronic whiplash, headaches and more! Treatment of TMJ syndrome is critical to success in treating many musculoskeletal complaints.

Structural Integration
Pre-requisites: Certificate IV in Massage Therapy Practice PLUS Myofascial Release / CST 3, Pathophysiology / DPE and Supervised Clinic 2

Details the concepts and techniques of using the osseous structures as levers to effect release of fascia. Upper and lower body techniques and advanced craniosacral therapy techniques demonstrated.

Pathophysiology for Tactile Therapies
Disease, symptoms & diagnosis
Pre-requisites: Anatomy & Physiology

This subject looks at the nature of common disease states including signs and symptoms that a tactile therapist may encounter in clinical practice.
This course also includes a research project – Develop Professional Expertise.

Specialised Remedial Massage
Pre-requisites: All subjects pertaining to your particular qualification, including Certificate IV

This subject looks at providing remedial treatments to people with special needs and is the final subject before completion of the Diploma of Remedial Massage.

This is a home study assignment. It can be commenced at any time providing you meet the pre-requisites.

Sports Massage 1 & 2
Deep Tissue Massage

Sports 1 – Pre-requisites: Massage 1 & 2, Supervised Clinic 1 and Structural Anatomy

Sports 2 – Pre-requisites: Sports 1, Trigger Point 1 Plus Anatomy and Physoiology 1

Sport Deep Tissue massage helps the athlete maintain a consistent, injury-free training program and improve athletic recovery time. The course is remedially and therapeutically orientated and sets the foundation for further study of soft tissue dysfunctions. This massage can be used in conjunction with techniques learnt in Massage II for a deeper effect in clinical practice.

Structural Anatomy
Pre-requisites: Massage 1 & 2

This one-day workshop will assist students to develop their palpation skills, identify boney landmarks, locate muscle groups, and identify and locate the origins and insertions of the body.

*Note: Structural Anatomy is a pre-requisite to Sports Massage 1 and Trigger Point 1.

Supervised Clinic 1 & 2
Pre-requisites: Massage 1 & 2

Students give massage treatments to clients from the general public in our Supervised Clinic.

Supervised Clinic allows the students to practice skills and techniques they have learned and apply it to members of the public in an authentic massage clinic. This enables the students to enhance their skills and receive valuable feedback to improve their treatments, ensuring that when they obtain their accreditation, they are fully competent and skilled practitioners.

Supervised Clinic is a component of both the Certificate IV in Massage Therapy Practice and the Diploma of Remedial Massage.

Hours are Monday to Friday mornings from 9:00am to 1:00pm; Monday & Friday afternoons from 1:30pm to 5:30pm; Saturday mornings from 9:30am to 1:30pm and Saturday afternoons from 2:00pm to 5:00pm.

Note: Supervised Clinic 1, along with Structural Anatomy, is a pre-requisite to studying Sport Massage


Trigger Point Therapy 1 & 2
Neuromuscular Techniques
Pre-requisites:

Trigger Point I – Sport Massage and Structural Anatomy
Trigger Point 2 – Certificate IV in Massage Therapy Practice PLUS Trigger Point 1

A trigger point is a hypersensitive area in a muscle that, when compressed, is locally tender and often related to referred pain. Systematically working on these points can effectively reduce pain and correct muscle spasm. This remedial course teaches you about trigger points, locations and pain patterns. The course will focus on common musculoskeletal disorders including neck and back problems. Trigger Point therapy is extensively used to treat sport injuries and chronic pain and dysfunction.
